Irish Brown Bread

Ingredients
- 5 cups of whole wheat flour
- 2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
- 1/3 cup of sugar
- 2 teaspoons of baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of butter
- 2 eggs
- 2 1/4 cups of buttermilk
Directions
- In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients.
- By hand work in butter until the mixture resembles fine bread crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, best eggs until frothy.
- Stir in buttermilk.
- Make a large well in the center of the dry ingredients and gradually add the egg mixture, mixing by hand until a stiff dough is formed.
- Turn out on floured board and knead thoroughly.
- Divide dough in half and shape into two round balls.
- Flatten tops slightly and with a sharp knife cut an X about an inch deep.
- Put loaves on oiled baking sheet and bake in a 375 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes.
- Should be brown and baked through.
- Cool before cutting into slices.
